Grow It invites all Southland Foodies, would-be growers, brewers online this September to help shape Southland’s food and fibre sectors to become more innovative and sustainable.
This week-long summit brings together Kiwi founders from brands you know and love, changemakers, farmers, and local legends to explore what makes a product sell well, and the journey it takes to grow an innovative brand.

DAY ONE: Monday 27 September.
9.30am - Körero kawhe
Kick off the week with our virtual coffee check-in to share where you’re at in your food journey. A great chance to meet other foodies and founders who will be tuning in for the week. Facilitated by the team at COIN South.
12.30pm - Kiwi Food Icon: Tom Hishon - Orphans Kitchen, Kingi and Daily Bread
Tom Hishon is the head chef and co-owner of awarding restaurant Orphans Kitchen, DAILY BREAD an artisan bakery specialising in organic sourdough bread and kingi , a sustainable seafood restaurant in the heart of downtown Auckland. A childhood spent in rural Southland prepped Tom for a career in food, instilling in him the belief that food is not only for nourishment, but for bonding over, celebrating and bringing family together.

9.30am - Southland Food Storytellers: Dan and Ethan
Dan Tarrant of Ruapuke Uncut, and Chef Ethan Flack are our Murihiku representatives for Kaitaki - a Collective of Eat New Zealand Food Guides. Their focus is on unearthing the stories of Southland and sharing them with the country. Listen as they share their vision.
12.30pm - Anything but boring: Morgan Maw of Boring® Oat Milk
Morgan is Aotearoa’s unofficial Oat Queen. Morgan Maw has been working with oats since 2013, where she founded oatcake brand Bonnie. Drawn to homegrown oats because of their nutritional and sustainable profile, Morgan set about creating quality products to help increase the demand of this glorious grain and contribute to a more diversified farming landscape in Aotearoa. Pivoting the focus from the pantry to the fridge, Morgan launched Boring® Oat Milk in August 2021. An oat milk that is made in New Zealand using New Zealand oats – a first of its kind on our supermarket shelves. Come and have a chat with Morgan in this informal Q+A.

9am - Food resilience in the community discussion: Kiwi Harvest and The Pantry
Kiwi Harvest is a national food rescue organisation that collects surplus and donated food and distributes it to community organisations across New Zealand. And they’ve just come to Southland. Join us as we chat with founder Deborah Manning about the surges in demand for food in the South. We’ll also be speaking with Alice O’Brien from The Pantry, whose initiative ‘Pay it Forward’ is the result of that same demand during lockdown.
10.30am - Where does food fit? South Coast Environment Society
A discussion about how we can increase food resilience by using a variety of spaces, public and private, to produce a variety of foods.
12.30pm - Eradicate hunger in Aotearoa: Kete Kai
Lisa Booth is founder and CEO of Kete Kai, Aotearoa’s most accessible food box — borne out of her frustration with the current food system. Lisa is also an activator with SheEO, a global initiative that challenges how woman-led ventures are funded and celebrated.
Virtual Food Hub tour: Jane Stanton
Get a virtual tour of the Southern Pioneers Food Hub with local legend, Jane Stanton. The hub is a shared space to help accelerate small food businesses by offering them a kitchen to test ideas, design their product and learn from the best.

9am - Angus Brown of Ārepa
Angus Brown is co-founder and CEO of Ārepa, an award-winning brain food technology company with a mission to make brains work better and slow down the rate of neurological decline through accessible, science-backed brain food. Angus has also worked for NZ government in food-technology at the incubator factory The FoodBowl.
10am - Cleo Gilmour of LILO
Join Cleo Gilmour, co-founder of plant based dessert start up LILO. LILO started as a tasty value-add to undersized or weather damaged cherries and has evolved to a food-tech desserts movement delivering ready to eat, gluten and dairy free cheesecakes. Cleo's background is in marketing New Zealand brands in China which has inspired her to think bigger and design LILO for international as well as local markets.
12.30pm - Local Legend: James Owen of Fat Bastard Pies
Join us for an informal chat with James about turning the humble pie into an Invercargill icon and how getting big can mean staying small.
1pm - Local Legend: Benji Biswas of Crunchy
Join us for an informal chat with Benji about his journey as a startup founder, to a full time Micro-green Champion. And how he plans on taking over the work one container at a time. Plus an open Q+A.
1.30 - Local Legends: Logan and Melissa from Farm Fresh South
Join us for an informal chat about moving south and turning a dairy farm into a local pasteurised milk supplier and providing fresh local produce delivered to your door.

10am - Invercargill City Council
Join Ann Thompson, Senior Environmental Health Officer and her team as they help new food business owners navigate through registration processes and provide helpful resources and tips.
11.30am - Join Kiwi food icon Nadia Lim
Former MasterChef New Zealand winner Nadia Lim is a household name and kiwi food icon. As author of eleven best-selling books, producer of "Nadia's Comfort Kitchen" and one of the founders of My Food Bag. These days her biggest passion is farming and Nadia has a “deep responsibility to follow the journey of what goes on behind our plates”. Along with husband Carlos she runs a 1,200 acre farm in Central Otago where they farm regeneratively and produce everything from lamb, wool, organic green produce, grains, seeds, pasture-raised eggs and honey. An amazing opportunity to hear from an inspiring food legend.
